Hinduism is an Indian subcontinental religion or way of life. [1] It is the third largest religion in the world, with more than 1.2 billion adherents, or 15–16% of the global population, known as Hindus. [2] [3] [4] The term Hindu is a derivative, [5] [6] and Hinduism is considered the world's oldest living religion. [7] [8] [9] Many practitioners refer to their religion as Sanatana Dharma , or the Eternal Way, as revealed in Hindu scriptures , implying that its origins lie outside of human history. [10] It is also known as 'Vedic religion' as the religion is based on the Vedas.[11]
Hinduism is a diverse school of thought characterized by different philosophies and shared concepts, rituals , cosmological systems , places of pilgrimage, and shared textual sources that deal with theology, metaphysics , Puranas , Vedic sacrifices , yoga , agamic rites , and temple construction. Religious rites are mainly performed with the aim of achieving the four goals of dharma (morality), artha (prosperity), kama (aspiration) and moksha (attainment of God), collectively called purushartha ; As well as there are actions andSamsara (cycle of death and rebirth). Along with rituals like yajna , meditation, puja , kirtan, istnam japa, pilgrimage, etc., importance is given to eternal moral behavior of kindness, restraint, patience, non-violence towards animals etc. [12] The means of attaining salvation are given more importance than outward conduct , to achieve which some renounce worldly material possessions and take up a life of asceticism. [12] [13]
